Buying a used laptop is a fifteen minute inspection or an expensive guess. This is the fifteen minute version: a sequence you can run in front of a seller, in order, with the checks that catch the expensive problems first.
Take a USB drive with a few large files on it, a pair of headphones, and something to write on. If the seller will not let you spend fifteen minutes with the machine powered on, that is itself the answer.
Before you touch the keyboard
- Look at the corners and the base. Scuffed corners mean the machine has been dropped or carried loose. Look for gaps where panels meet, which indicate a previous opening or a swelling battery underneath.
- Put it on a flat surface and press each corner. A machine that rocks has either a bent chassis or a swollen battery. A swollen battery is a safety issue and a repair cost, and it is the single most common reason a cheap laptop is cheap.
- Open and close the lid three times, from the centre. Watch the seam near the hinge. Any separation, creaking or lid wobble matters more than it looks, explained separately under what hinges tell you about build quality.
- Check the screws. Rounded or chewed screw heads mean the machine has been opened, probably not by someone with the right driver. That is not automatically bad, but you should ask what was done.

Battery health, before anything else
This is the check that most changes the value of the machine, and it takes two minutes.
On macOS, hold Option and click the Apple menu, choose System Information, and look under Power for cycle count and condition. On Windows, open a command prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the HTML file it writes. Compare design capacity against full charge capacity.
Interpret it honestly. Above 85 percent of design capacity is healthy. Between 80 and 85 is serviceable. Below 80 percent means a replacement is coming, and you should subtract the cost of one from what you offer. Storage health
A drive is cheap to replace, but you want to know. On Windows, wmic diskdrive get status gives a quick answer, and any SMART utility gives a fuller one. On macOS, System Information under Storage reports SMART status. Look specifically at power on hours and, for a solid state drive, total bytes written against its rated endurance.
A drive reporting anything other than a normal or verified status is a drive to walk away from, or to price as though it were absent.
The display
- Set the brightness to maximum and display a full white image. Look for dark patches, uneven brightness at the edges, and any yellow or pink cast in one region.
- Display a full black image in a dim room. Look for backlight bleed along the edges and any bright stuck pixels.
- Display a solid red, then green, then blue. Dead pixels show up against colour more readily than against white.
- Move the lid slowly through its full range while watching for flicker or lines. Flicker that changes with lid angle indicates a display cable being worked by a failing hinge, which is an expensive combination.
Keyboard, trackpad and ports
Open a text editor and press every key, including the modifiers and the function row. This takes ninety seconds and catches a fault that on most machines means replacing the whole top case, as explained examined closely under why laptop keyboards fail.
Run a finger across the whole trackpad surface, then test click in each corner. Plug your USB drive into every port in turn and copy a large file both ways. Ports that work intermittently or only at an angle are board level repairs. Plug in headphones and play something. Then play something through the speakers at high volume and listen for rattle.
A short thermal test
Ten minutes of sustained load tells you more than every other check combined. Run something demanding, watch the temperature with any monitoring tool, and listen.
What you want to see: temperature climbing to a plateau and staying there, with fan noise that is loud but smooth. What should concern you: a mechanical rattle from the fan, temperatures that keep climbing without plateauing, or a machine that shuts down. The questions worth asking
Ask whether the machine has ever been opened, repaired, or had liquid on it. Ask for the original charger, because a proprietary replacement costs real money. Ask what the seller used it for, since a machine that rendered video for three years has had a different life from one that ran a browser.
Then check two things yourself that sellers rarely volunteer: whether the model’s memory is soldered, which decides whether the machine can ever be upgraded, and whether the manufacturer still supplies service parts for it.
