A docking station promises one cable to your desk: power, monitors, network, and every peripheral, connected the moment you sit down. Behind that convenience is a bandwidth negotiation that decides what actually works at the same time, and understanding it explains every dock disappointment before you buy one.

What a dock really is

A dock is a bandwidth splitter. Everything you plug into it shares the single connection back to the laptop, and that connection has a fixed ceiling. A dock cannot deliver more bandwidth than the port it is attached to, so the question is never what the dock supports, it is what your laptop’s port supports and how the dock divides it.
